Christian counseling

Can Christian faith be part of counseling?

Christ-centered counseling for women and female students in Waterloo, Iowa, with a licensed Iowa therapist for whom faith isn't a marketing category.

Your faith may be one of the most important parts of who you are. It makes sense that you would want a counselor who understands that, rather than one who politely works around it.

Lori is a Licensed Independent Social Worker (LISW), licensed in the State of Iowa, and a Certified Spiritual Director. She loves Jesus, and she offers professional, evidence-based counseling where your Christian faith can be part of the conversation, as much or as little as you want it to be.

You don't have to arrive with your faith in good working order. Distance, doubt, anger and silence are all things people bring here.

Where does faith fit into counseling?

Faith rarely stays in a separate compartment. It tends to show up in exactly the places counseling is already working:

  • Anxiety: what it means to trust God when your body won't stop scanning for danger.
  • Depression: praying in a season when God feels far away.
  • Relationships: forgiveness, boundaries, and what love actually requires.
  • Eating and body image: being made in God's image while hating what you see.
  • Self-worth: believing you're loved when you can't earn it that week.
  • Grief: the honest questions loss raises, and the clichés that don't help.
  • Decisions and transitions: discernment when every option costs something.
  • Purpose: who you are, apart from what you produce.

How does Christian counseling work in practice?

You set the terms. Some clients want prayer or scripture to be part of sessions, and some simply want a counselor who shares their framework without ever bringing it up directly. Some start in one place and move to another. Lori will ask, and she'll keep asking.

The counseling itself remains professional counseling: assessment when it's appropriate, goals, and evidence-based approaches such as cognitive behavioral work.

If what you're really looking for is space to attend to God rather than to work on symptoms, that's spiritual direction, and here's how the two differ.

Common questions

Does Lori Rasmussen offer Christian counseling in Waterloo, Iowa?

Yes. Lori offers Christ-centered, faith-based counseling for women and female students who want their Christian faith included in counseling. She is a Licensed Independent Social Worker (LISW) licensed in Iowa and a Certified Spiritual Director, and her own Christian faith is genuinely part of who she is.

Do I have to be a Christian to see Lori for counseling?

No. Faith is an invitation, not a requirement. Some clients want scripture and prayer in the room; others never bring faith up at all. Both are completely welcome.

Is Christian counseling the same as spiritual direction?

No. Christian counseling is professional counseling for emotional and mental-health concerns, with faith welcome in the conversation. Spiritual direction is a separate practice focused on attending to God and discerning God's movement in your life. Lori offers both, separately.
