Spiritual Direction

What is God doing in this season of your life?

A quiet, confidential hour to pay attention to God, with Lori Rasmussen, Certified Spiritual Director, in Waterloo, Iowa or online.

Spiritual Direction is the act of paying attention to God, calling attention to God, being attentive to God in a person or circumstances or a situation… It notices the Invisibilities in and beneath and around the Visibilities. It listens for the Silences between the spoken Sounds.
Eugene H. Peterson

How do you know if spiritual direction is right for you?

  • Are you longing for more of God, to hear his voice and rest in his love?
  • Do you want to discover what purpose God is calling you to?
  • Is there confusion or stuckness in your spiritual life you'd like to bring into discernment?
  • Would you like to heal spiritually from past wounds and hurts?
  • Are you drawn toward spiritual practices you'd like to integrate into daily life?

If you answered yes to any of these, you're invited into the sacred space of spiritual direction.

What happens together

What happens in a spiritual direction session?

As your spiritual director, I hope to partner with you and the Holy Spirit through our presence and attentiveness to the Spirit's movement in your everyday life of faith.

Together we listen, explore, discover and celebrate how God is shaping you in his image and guiding you in the work of his kingdom.

We use prayer, silence, scripture, discernment and holy listening, among other Christian spiritual practices, to grow and deepen your intimacy with Christ.

An invitation to receive

I almost turned around in the parking lot.

I remember the day I nervously walked across the parking lot to meet with a spiritual director for the first time. There was a lot of unknown about what that hour might hold. And as a counselor, I'm usually the one asking the questions. I almost turned to leave.

But the invitation that day to simply receive the space, and to focus on what God is up to in my own life, was a gift. A space to pause and let the Holy Spirit stir my own heart, drawing me closer to God. So good for my soul.

I continue to sit with a spiritual director on a regular basis. Humility, accountability and intentional reflection on God's love encourage and stretch me as I seek to follow Jesus.

Being part of spiritual direction over the past several years grew my own desire to provide this space for you. My training as a Certified Spiritual Director deepened my listening and expanded my ability to notice what the Holy Spirit might be up to.

May you prayerfully consider joining me, so that you too may receive and uncover what is stirring in your own heart.

Common questions about spiritual direction

What is spiritual direction?

Spiritual direction is an intentional, confidential space to pay attention to God: to slow down, pray, listen, reflect and discern where God is at work in your everyday life. Sessions typically last up to one hour and may include prayer, silence, scripture, discernment and holy listening.

How is spiritual direction different from counseling?

Counseling focuses on emotional and mental-health concerns, symptoms and problems. Spiritual direction focuses on attentiveness to God and discernment of God's movement in your life. Both offer thoughtful, confidential space and lots of good questions, but their purposes are different. Spiritual direction is not psychotherapy.

Is Lori a certified spiritual director?

Yes. Lori Rasmussen is a Certified Spiritual Director, and she also meets regularly with a spiritual director of her own. Sessions may take place in person in Waterloo, Iowa or online, and spiritual direction is private pay.
